MTD means reporting your income to HMRC throughout the year, not just once. In practice, this looks like:
MTD for ITSA stands for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment.
It’s a government initiative that requires self-employed individuals and landlords to keep digital records and submit quarterly returns to HMRC, rather than filing a single annual tax return.
If you’re self-employed and/or a landlord and your total income from these sources is over £50,000, you’ll need to follow MTD for ITSA from April 2026.
If you earn between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027.
Those earning less than £30,000 will be included later.
The start date depends on your income level:
£50,000 or more: You’ll need to start from April 2026.
Between £30,000 and £50,000: Your start date is April 2027.
Below £30,000: The government hasn’t confirmed a date yet, but it’s likely that you’ll need to make the switch sometime in 2028.
Under MTD for ITSA, you’ll need to:
We handle all of that for you, so you don’t have to worry!
Not quite. MTD for VAT is already in place for all VAT-registered businesses.
MTD for ITSA is a separate scheme, just for income tax, and it’s rolling out from April 2026.
No problem! Our service will include MTD-compatible software and expert support, so you won’t need to worry about the technical setup. We’ll take care of the digital filing for you.
