You’re generally considered a UK resident by HM Revenue & Customs if you meet either of the following:
You spent 183 days or more in the UK during the tax year
You owned or rented your only home in the UK for 90+ days and spent at least 30 days living there
A Double Taxation Agreement is a treaty between two countries designed to ensure you don’t pay tax twice on the same income, protecting you from being taxed in both jurisdictions.
If you’re a UK resident, HMRC taxes your worldwide income, so you must report both UK and foreign earnings on your Self Assessment tax return.
No DTA with the UK: You may be taxed in both countries.
DTA in place: You can claim relief or credit on your UK tax return to avoid double taxation.
If you earn income in the UK while living abroad, you must file a UK Self Assessment tax return, but only report and pay tax on your UK-sourced income.
DTA in place: You can often claim a credit or refund for UK tax already paid.
Remittance basis option: Stay non-resident for tax purposes — pay UK tax on UK income only, while foreign income is taxed in its home country.
The remittance basis lets you avoid UK tax on foreign income if you don’t transfer it into the UK.
However, when using this basis, you forfeit your UK tax-free allowances, so only income and gains brought into the UK are taxed.
The one-off fee covers the full preparation and submission of your Self Assessment by a qualified accountant, including VAT.
Any additional work outside the standard service will be communicated before extra charges apply.
